Food Allergy Diagnosis and Treatment
Food allergies affect about 7% of all children. Cow's milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame seeds and kiwi are the most common food allergies in kids. Wheat and soy allergies are rare by comparison. In adults, shell fish, peanuts, fish and tree nuts are the most common allergies. Most children will outgrow their egg allergies by age 6, nut allergies on the other hand usually persist. Food allergies can cause skin problems (rashes and red welts), upset stomach (pain, diarrhea or vomiting) or breathing problems (respiratory allergies or trouble breathing). Children with severe cases of eczema often have underlying food allergies. Blood or skin prick testing for food allergies is the best way to diagnose food allergies. However, neither form of allergy testing is always reliable so careful food elimination trials are necessary to clarify which foods are causing which allergy symptoms.
