Spring Time Allergies

It's spring! The weather is warming up, flowers are blooming, and .... your allergies may have started acting up.

Allergies occur when a person's immune system over reacts to a foreign substance, or allergen. Examples of allergies include foods, pet dander, and chemicals. Hay fever, is a common term for an allergic response to pollen grains. While this allergy can occur year round, many people react more in the spring and fall when certain plants pollinate.

Symptoms include watery eyes, runny nose, sinus pressure, sneezing, slight cough, and headaches. It is best to start an antihistamine, such as Zyrtec, before symptoms worsen. Futicasone nasal spray is often also helpful. If these medications, along with a healthy diet low in inflammatory foods (such as dairy and processed carbohydrates), do not improve your symptoms, please make an appointment to visit our office.

If you get a fever, severe sore throat, or your symptoms seem worse than normal allergies, you could be fighting off a virus or bacterial infection. If you have questions or are unsure what medications are right for you, please make an appointment. In the meantime, go out and enjoy the great outdoors!
